It’s Cycle Logical

YOU can’t turn on a news programme on the television these days without a report suggesting that we have major problems with obesity, diet and lack of physical activity.

The Community Planning Partnership is serious about supporting changes in what we do so that we improve our low rates of exercise. It has set aside some developmental money to promote initiatives that will increase rates of cycling and walking in West Dunbartonshire.

The area is fortunate in having a range of existing cycle and foot paths, including the national cycle path (NCP7) from Glasgow to Loch Lomond, traversing many interesting landscapes and passing a range of significant historical and natural sites. The limited resources committed to increase walking and cycling in the area is being used to:

  • UPGRADE and make some existing footpaths more useable and safe in Haldane and Drumry and relate these to young people’s activities.
  • Develop much better signage for paths in Dumbarton
  • Issue primary school kids in P1 and P2 with high visibility outdoor vests and bags to ensure better safety for them as they walk to school. This is being run by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue as the Hi Viz Kidz scheme

Develop a set of user friendly cycling and walking maps with particular targeting of more deprived areas It is hoped to build on these projects and other initiatives in future years so that we maximise every opportunity to walk or cycle.
